This airplane was assigned to the 23d Tactical Air Support Squadron from 1967 to 1971 in Southeast Asia and flew Forward Air Control missions over Laos, North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The primary mission was to direct air interdiction missions over the Ho Chi Minh trail. Since most of the traffic moved at night, night tactics were developed. This included pioneering use of first generation night vision devices (starlight scopes) and directing airstrikes using ground and aerial flares. After its return to the United States, the airplane was used by the Air National Guard, taking advantage of its aerial observation abilities to provide post-disaster reconnaissance was well as continued training for forward air control.
